Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was also raised by her maternal grandmother, and was raised as an only child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she was accepted into Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education while also working at two different job. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. This dream however, was in vain when she left the college after a year of studying and becoming a teacher's assistant. Her first job was as a spoken-word artist performing her own pieces during live poetry readings. She later joined forces with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up working together as well as co-writing You Got Me. At a Roots performance, she came out as an artist. In the following years, she managed to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to gain experiences on the stage, as she appeared in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was the first signing artist on the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
